The "Amigos de los Animales" Story
The "Amigos de los Animales" animal shelter-humane society began between 1992 and 1993 by Ann Marie and Wilson, Nadine and Henry Laxen, and veterinarian Aldo Barragán because Nadine and Henry came across a run-over puppy with no place to be cared for or sheltered. Aldo helped them, and they wanted to continue helping more animals. This showed the clear lack of a place to attend to, shelter, and put up for adoption stray and abused dogs and cats in Mazatlán. After a couple of years, they managed to find a location and legally established the association on January 3, 1997.
We work through donations and it does not receive any government or any institutional support, which severely limits its ability to help more animals in need. Currently, we care for around two hundred animals between dogs and cats, in the shelter, in foster homes, and under protection, with about one hundred and eighty housed at the shelter.
Our vision is a Mazatlán free of stray dogs and cats, free of animal abuse, and more empathetic and conscious of the living beings around us. We believe that sterilization and neutering are the paths to achieving a Mazatlán without abandonment. That’s why we offer low-cost sterilizations and often cover the expenses ourselves because our main goal is to help the furry ones.

We provide safe and responsible adoptions:
Vaccines
Internal and external deworming (fleas, ticks and parasites)
Spaying/neutering
A small recovery fee is requested to cover part of the expenses.

Amigos de los Animales partnership
As part of our partnership we provide help with various activities like construction and maintenance, adoption fairs, temporal shelter on extreme weather conditions at the Community Centers of Hope, weekly volunteers, among other things. We believe that together we will achieve a true paradise for all.
